If you use the internet or the smartphone, you have definitely heard of Instagram. The global social media platform has amassed more than a billion active daily users, and it’s still growing. From celebrities to your friends, everyone seems to be on Instagram nowadays, and Finsta is a term I think most of us have heard either through social media, TV shows or movies, but what is Finsta and how is it helping people keep their real-life away from the reel-life.
Finsta is a shortened version of Fake Instagram or Finstagram, and I know what you guys are thinking about; it sounds so shady, right? Well, don’t be afraid there is nothing shady about these accounts, nor are all of these bot accounts. These are real people like you and me.
According to Meriam Webster, Finsta’s refer to an account made so that a user can post images and interact with other accounts in a more private setting, usually reserving the account’s followers to closest friends.
The Rise of Finstas
The amount of Finsta’s has dramatically risen in recent years, with most of the accounts coming from teenage users (school students), predominantly teenage girls.
The rise can be attributed to all the negative remarks, strict parenting etc., that leads the teenagers to open Finsta’s where they can express themselves freely with their closest friends in a safe space.
So for a teenager, this Instagram account is sort of an escape from the perfect, well-filtered lives they need to create on social media wherein today’s day and age are heavily monitored by parents or knit-picking relatives.
Even celebrities are known to have to Finsta’s to escape from their millions of followers and just be their casual selves with their circle of friends.
In short, the idea of having one doesn’t seem like that bad of an idea, honestly. So, why not make one ourselves?
Here’s a quick guide on how to create a Finsta:
- Create a new Instagram Account.
- Give your username. Remember, you can’t put your name from your actual life. Give a completely random name. For example, it can be your favourite anime mixed with your favourite food i.e Narpizza. It can be literally ANYTHING.
- Do not link your Instagram account with your Facebook account. Otherwise, everyone will find out about this account (We don’t want that happening.)
- Follow your closest friends.
- Now, you have to make your Finsta post, and that’s it. You can post anything you want here, it’s your private space to do whatever. You can post artsy pictures, candid pictures, candid, less-edited version of pictures from your public account and the list goes on and on.

1. Make your account private, private accounts are less likely to be found as you control who has access to it.
2. Disable sharing options. So, no one can share your post or stories.
3. Remove fake accounts when they send you a follow request.
