6 Marketing and SaaS podcasts worth listening to; an unsponsored list for 2020

Interests on podcasts is steadily growing:

At a different scale, both Marketing and business podcasts, in general, are growing in popularity:

I’ve listened to podcasts for a while and wanted to share with you some of those I, as a SaaS marketer, pay attention to.

None of the podcasts listed here sponsored this blog post so you can be sure I’m sharing those podcasts I honestly think are worth listening to.

Masters of Scale

My favorite of the list is Masters of Scale, hosted by y Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn.

Its production and guests are top-notch, and they offer both tactical and strategic insight from world leaders.

My favorite episode, by far, is “Be a platform” with the founder of Shopify.

I bring up this episode in every discussion I have on product and scalability; you should become a platform where everyone wins in order to scale.

As an aspiring product person, I understand that there’s a difference between providing and taking value from the market; there’s no way you can build all the features your users need, but you can build an ecosystem so other developers can build them for you.

That’s why Shopify, instead of building all their features, opened a developer marketplace where programmers could share and sell their plugins.

Such insight is what justifies companies to develop APIs so integrations with other tools is feasible.

Hey Digital

Hey Digital is perfect for SaaS marketers like me – they produce the exact content I love to consume.

Instead of abstraction, which sometimes is important, Hey Digital offers actionable tactics and insights by interviewing the people behind the SaaS business I admire and follow.

I always wonder what these amazing companies do to grow and this podcast offers such value.

Here’s an example:

I have followed Bonjoro for about a year. When I found it I thought it was a smart, cool product that was meant to grow—and they do it.

In this episode, they break down their exact affiliate marketing strategy that is helping them a significant amount of their users. Such a channel makes ton of sense when users love your product.

Besides Bonjoro, for which we have a dedicated blog post on personal videos, they have episodes like:

SaaS marketer

SaaS Marketer takes a pretty similar approach to Hey Digital – they interview highly relevant SaaS businesses to share their thoughts and experiences in what they’re doing best.

I should highlight that they interview pretty exciting companies that are not necessarily under the radar of most businesses or are not yet mature, which is great because their insight is more accurate and contextual for most companies.

Listening to companies like Lemlist or Viddyoze, which are not yet the standard or unicorns but are growing fast, may be more insightful for most early SaaS than listening to a Microsoft executive whose challenges and thought process apply more for corporations.

Scale or Die

I have followed Proof for a while. When I found them, I thought the concept of real-time social proof was a brilliant idea and smart. I think now it lost novelty, feels unauthentic, and sometimes spammy.

However, I think Proof’s marketing team does a great job and one of their outputs is their podcasts Scale or Die, where they invite top-notch experts in the digital marketing field to share their insights.

One great example is Conversion XL, the world-leading source to learn Conversion Rate Optimization

Inside Intercom

To be honest, I have heard Intercom’s podcast once or twice but I liked it.

I mention Intercom in the list because they’re a reference of SaaS businesses success.

While I agree they’re falling in the trap of becoming too expensive, the way they do marketing and build product is admirable.

Their book “Intercom on Marketing” is great and actionable.

I loved the episode on how they “make every day count” and I encourage you to hear more from them.

They’re the kind of companies that take their marketing pretty seriously.

Drift

I could say Drift is an Intercom alternative, but they have so many products that they’re like a Sales Automation bundle launching great things, and growing fast.

Drift doesn’t have one but multiple podcasts – one for each aspect of a company:

I follow Drift because I respect those companies that bet hard on content marketing and they do, for sure. Their blog posts, videos, free courses, free tools, and more are great, and those things deserve to be shared.

Product Hunt Radio

Product Hunt is the website where startups, makers, and early adopters gather.

Product Hunt Radio gathers the best people on the product.

In the episode “How to design products that delight your users”, for instance, they brought Ethan Esmann, the Design VP at Slack with experience with Uber, Google, or Adobe to ask them their thought process on how they build products people love.

If you’re serious into product, I highly recommend you to follow and visit Product Hunt on a weekly basis, at least.
